The Mission to the Undefended Village

Colonel Cathcart's group is ordered to bomb a tiny, undefended mountain village to create a roadblock. The mission is unnecessary and cruel, and many of the men object. Colonel Korn dismisses their concerns, emphasizing the importance of a tight bomb pattern for a good aerial photograph. The mission is a stark example of the military's indifference to human life and its obsession with meaningless metrics.
