Hungry Joe Dies in His Sleep

Hungry Joe, who has finished his missions and is waiting to go home, dies in his sleep. Huple's cat is found on his face, suffocating him. His death is a darkly comic and anticlimactic end for a character who has been tormented by nightmares and the fear of flying. It underscores the randomness of death and the futility of his struggle to survive the war only to die in a freak accident.
