Ampleforth and Parsons appear in the cell
The poet Ampleforth is brought into Winston's cell, shoeless and unshaven. He tells Winston he was arrested for allowing the word 'God' to remain at the end of a line of Kipling's poetry, because there was no rhyme for 'rod.' Soon after, Parsons is brought in, wearing khaki shorts and a sports-shirt. Parsons confesses that he is guilty of thoughtcrime, having said 'Down with Big Brother!' in his sleep. His little daughter denounced him to the patrols. Parsons is pathetically eager to be tried fairly and expresses trust in the Party. He uses the lavatory in the cell, and the defective plug leaves a stench behind for hours.
