Julia falls asleep while Goldstein's book is read
Julia arrives at the room and immediately kneels down by the oil stove to make coffee. Winston suggests they must both read the book, but Julia says he should read it aloud and explain it as he goes. He reads the first chapter to her, but when he looks up she has fallen asleep. Winston shuts the book, lies down, and pulls the coverlet over both of them. He reflects that he still has not learned the ultimate secret: he understands how the Party maintains power, but not why. Before falling asleep he murmurs, 'Sanity is not statistical.'
