O'Brien explains power for its own sake
O'Brien tells Winston that the Party seeks power entirely for its own sake, not for the good of others. 'The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.' He describes a future world of fear and treachery and torment, with no love except the love of Big Brother, and says 'If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - for ever.' Winston weakly insists that a civilization founded on fear and hatred cannot endure, but O'Brien replies that the Party creates human nature and is immortal. Winston is beaten down by the argument and by the pain of the dial.
