Winston fabricates Comrade Ogilvy

Winston undertakes the main job of the morning: rewriting Big Brother's Order for the Day, which had praised a now-disgraced Inner Party member named Withers. Since Withers has become an unperson, Winston decides to replace him with a fictitious hero named Comrade Ogilvy. He dictates a biography in Big Brother's familiar style, describing Ogilvy's childhood in the Spies, his denunciation of his uncle to the Thought Police, and his heroic death in action. Ogilvy never existed, but after a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs he will exist in the past as authentically as Julius Caesar. Winston feels a profound conviction that his version will be the one chosen by the Party.
