Syme explains Newspeak
Syme explains that the Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary is the definitive edition, and that the aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought. Words are being destroyed every day, and the language is being cut down to the bone. He gives examples such as 'ungood' instead of 'bad' and 'doubleplusgood' for something even better. The intention is to make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Syme says that by 2050 no one will be able to understand a conversation like the one they are having. Winston nearly says 'Except the proles,' but checks himself. He is convinced that Syme will be vaporized because he sees too clearly and speaks too plainly.
