July 1984, during Hate Week
Winston receives Goldstein's book
During the disorder at the demonstration, a man taps Winston on the shoulder and returns what appears to be his dropped brief-case. Inside is a heavy black volume, amateurishly bound, with the title 'The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism' by Emmanuel Goldstein. Winston carries it to work and keeps it between his feet while he works for the next six days. At last, after ninety hours of work in five days, Winston takes the book to the room above Mr Charrington's shop and opens it. He begins reading the analysis of the Party and the three super-states.
