Rocket bomb and severed hand

A man in a concertina-like black suit yells 'Steamer!' and Winston throws himself flat on the pavement. The rocket bomb demolishes a group of houses two hundred metres up the street. Afterward, Winston sees a severed hand, whitened like a plaster cast, and kicks it into the gutter. The incident is a brutal reminder of the constant violence that punctuates prole life, and of Winston's own growing callousness. He later thinks of this severed hand and compares it to a cabbage-stalk.
