Dream of mother and the Golden Country

Winston dreams of his mother, who disappeared when he was ten or eleven. In the dream she is sitting in a sinking ship with his baby sister in her arms, looking up at him through darkening water. He knows that they must die in order that he may remain alive, and there is no reproach in their faces. The dream makes him feel that his mother's death was tragic in a way no longer possible in his own time. Suddenly the dream changes, and Winston is standing on short springy turf in a place he calls the Golden Country. The dark-haired girl is coming towards him across the field, and with a single movement she tears off her clothes. He is overwhelmed not by desire but by admiration for the gesture, which seems to annihilate the whole culture of the Party. He wakes up with the word 'Shakespeare' on his lips.
