Winston is taken to Room 101

Winston is strapped upright in a chair in a deep underground room, unable to move. O'Brien tells him that Room 101 contains the worst thing in the world, and that for Winston the worst thing happens to be rats. A wire cage is brought in, containing two enormous rats, with a mask-like attachment that can be fitted over Winston's face. The rats are starving and vicious. O'Brien explains that pain is not always enough, but everyone has something unendurable, and for Winston it is rats. Winston's panic is overwhelming.
