Syme disappears

A morning comes when Syme is missing from work. A few thoughtless people comment on his absence, but on the next day nobody mentions him. On the third day Winston looks at the notice board in the Records Department and sees that the list of the Chess Committee has one name shorter. Syme has ceased to exist; he has never existed. Winston is not surprised, but he feels a kind of sadness. Syme was too intelligent, saw too clearly, and spoke too plainly.
