Julia explains the Party's sexual puritanism
Julia tells Winston that the Party's sexual puritanism is intended to induce hysteria, which can be transformed into war-fever and leader-worship. She says, 'When you make love you're using up energy; and afterwards you feel happy and don't give a damn for anything. They can't bear you to feel like that.' Winston agrees that chastity and political orthodoxy are directly connected. He reflects that the Party has also turned the family into an extension of the Thought Police, with children encouraged to spy on their parents. Julia is more acute than Winston in seeing how the system works, even though she is uninterested in political theory.
