O'Brien recruits them into the Brotherhood

O'Brien questions Winston and Julia about their willingness to commit murder, sabotage, betrayal, and even suicide. Julia breaks down at the question of separating from Winston, saying 'No!' and Winston also says 'No.' O'Brien says they did well to tell him, and that it is necessary for the Brotherhood to know everything. He tells them they will be fighting in the dark, and that later he will send them a book from which they will learn the true nature of society. He warns that they will be caught and confess, and that the Brotherhood cannot save them. Before Julia leaves, O'Brien gives her a tablet to conceal the smell of wine.
