Winston and Julia watch the prole woman
Winston wakes to hear the prole woman in the yard singing 'It was only a hopeless fancy.' He and Julia watch her pegging out diapers, and Winston is struck by her beauty and her vitality. He feels a mystical reverence, thinking that the people under the sky, all over the world, are storing up the power that will one day overturn the world. 'If there was hope, it lay in the proles!' he says. Julia is more practical, noting that the woman is a metre across the hips. Winston believes that out of those mighty loins a race of conscious beings must one day come. He says 'We are the dead,' and Julia echoes it dutifully.
