Oceania switches enemy from Eurasia to Eastasia

On the sixth day of Hate Week, during a night demonstration in a central London square, the orator announces in mid-sentence that Oceania is at war with Eastasia, not Eurasia. The crowd instantly understands, banners and posters are torn down, and a riotous interlude occurs while the Spies cut down streamers. Within minutes the hate continues exactly as before, but with a new target. The next moment Winston's briefcase is tapped on his shoulder by a man he does not see, who says, 'Excuse me, I think you've dropped your brief-case.' Winston takes it abstractedly, knowing it contains the book. The entire staff of the Ministry then works eighteen-hour days for five days to rectify all records of the change.
