Winston and Julia meet in Victory Square

Winston waits in Victory Square near the monument, and Julia appears at last. A crowd gathers to watch a convoy of Eurasian prisoners passing in trucks, and Winston pushes through the press of bodies until he is next to her. Their shoulders touch, and she murmurs detailed instructions for meeting on Sunday afternoon: take the train to Paddington, turn left outside the station, follow a lane, find a gate with no top bar, and wait in the wood. At the end she squeezes his hand for a fleeting moment. The prisoners' sad, incurious faces look at Winston as they pass.
