Planning future meetings
When Julia wakes, she becomes alert and businesslike. She arranges the details of the journey home, giving Winston a different route from the one by which he came. She tells him to wait half an hour before following her. They arrange to meet after work four evenings hence in a crowded market street, where she will blow her nose if the coast is clear. She refuses to tell him her surname or address, and he realizes it is inconceivable that they could ever meet indoors. The secrecy is a necessary part of their rebellion.
