O'Brien has Winston beaten on the elbow

O'Brien enters Winston's cell with a guard carrying a long black truncheon. Winston cries out, 'They've got you too!' but O'Brien says, 'They got me a long time ago.' He tells Winston that Winston has always known this. Then the guard strikes Winston on the elbow, and the pain is so intense that Winston collapses, clutching his arm. Winston learns an unforgettable lesson: 'Of pain you could wish only one thing: that it should stop. Nothing in the world was so bad as physical pain. In the face of pain there are no heroes.'
