Winston remembers Katharine

Winston thinks of Katharine, his wife, from whom he has been separated for eleven years. She was a tall, fair-haired, stupid and thoroughly orthodox Party member. Their marriage was approved by a committee, and the only recognized purpose of marriage is to beget children for the service of the Party. Winston remembers her hatred of sex, her stiff body, and her calling intercourse 'our duty to the Party.' He reflects that the Party is trying to kill the sex instinct, and that chastity is deeply ingrained in Party women. Winston sees the sexual act, successfully performed, as rebellion.
