Winston and Julia say We are the dead
Julia asks Winston whether he would rather sleep with her or a skeleton, and tells him to stop talking about dying. She presses her body against him, and he feels that she is pouring some of her youth and vigour into his. Then she begins making practical plans for their next meeting. Winston has already said 'We are the dead,' and she replies, 'We're not dead yet.' He believes they have at most six months, a year, or five years before the Thought Police catch them. Julia's vitality is in sharp contrast to his fatalism.
