June 1984, in the rented room
Julia brings black-market supplies
Julia arrives at the room with a brown canvas tool-bag full of spanners and a screwdriver, under which are hidden neat paper packets. She has brought real sugar, a white loaf, jam, a tin of milk, and a whole kilo of Inner Party coffee. She has also bought a complete set of make-up materials and painted her face, something unheard of for a Party woman. Winston is astonished and delighted. With just a few dabs of colour she has become far more feminine. They make coffee, and the smell of real coffee fills the room.
