one morning in July 1984, in the rented room
Winston tells Julia about his mother
Winston wakes up with his eyes full of tears and tells Julia that until this moment he believed he had murdered his mother. He recounts the memory of his mother and sister disappearing when he was a child. He had been given a chocolate ration and had demanded the whole piece, then snatched his sister's share and fled. When he came home, his mother and sister were gone. He reflects that his mother had possessed a kind of nobility because she obeyed private standards. The Party has persuaded people that mere impulses and feelings are of no account. He says aloud, 'The proles are human beings. We are not human.'
