Winston and Julia meet in the wood
Winston travels by train into the countryside, carrying a bunch of bluebells he has picked. A hand falls lightly on his shoulder, and it is the girl. She leads him through the trees to a tiny grassy knoll completely shut in by tall saplings. They are alone, and she tells him her name is Julia. They talk about their first impressions, and she tears off the scarlet sash of the Junior Anti-Sex League. Winston is overwhelmed by incredulity and pride, and Julia is matter-of-fact and bold. The clearing becomes their hideout.
