Childhood memory of the Tube station

While exercising, Winston tries to remember his childhood. He recalls an air raid that took everyone by surprise, perhaps when the atomic bomb fell on Colchester. He remembers his father's hand clutching his own as they hurried down a spiral staircase into a Tube station, his mother following far behind with his baby sister. In the crowded station an old man repeats over and over, 'We didn't ought to 'ave trusted 'em.' Winston cannot remember which 'buggers' the old man meant. He reflects that since about that time, war has been literally continuous, though the enemy has changed. The Party controls all records, so the past is whatever the Party decides it was.
