O'Brien interrogates Winston about the war and the photograph

Winston is strapped to a bed in a room with a dial that controls electric pain. O'Brien shows him a photograph of Jones, Aaronson and Rutherford and then destroys it in a memory hole, saying it never existed. He asks Winston which power Oceania is at war with, and Winston says Eastasia, but admits that he remembers the war being against Eurasia. O'Brien insists that the Party controls all records and memories, and therefore controls the past. Winston feels a deadly helplessness when O'Brien calmly says he does not remember the photograph.
