Winston writes about the war film

While writing in the diary, Winston pours out a stream of memories about a film he saw the previous night. The film shows a ship full of refugees being bombed, a fat man trying to swim away, a helicopter killing him, and then a lifeboat full of children. A middle-aged woman, possibly a Jewess, tries to protect a three-year-old boy, but a twenty-kilo bomb blows the boat to matchwood. The audience applauds, though a prole woman protests and is turned out. Winston stops writing because of cramp, but the memory of the film has clarified a different memory: the Two Minutes Hate that morning. The film's cruelty and the crowd's reaction show how the Party has deformed human feeling, and Winston's revulsion is part of what drives him to begin the diary.
