July 1984, in the Inner Party quarter
Winston and Julia visit O'Brien's flat
Winston and Julia arrive separately at O'Brien's flat in the luxurious Inner Party quarter. O'Brien's servant, Martin, admits them and leads them into a long, softly lit room. O'Brien is sitting at a table under a green-shaded lamp, and when he finishes his message he turns off the telescreen, a privilege that astonishes Winston. O'Brien offers them wine, which Winston has only read about, and raises his glass 'To our Leader: To Emmanuel Goldstein.' Winston realizes that the Brotherhood is real.
