late June or early July 1984, in the Ministry corridor
O'Brien gives Winston his address
O'Brien stops Winston in the long corridor at the Ministry, almost at the spot where Julia had slipped him the note. He praises Winston's Newspeak article and says he was reading it in the Times. O'Brien mentions a friend who is an expert, and Winston fears it is a reference to the vaporized Syme. O'Brien scribbles his address on a slip of paper beneath the telescreen, where any watcher could read it, and hands it to Winston. Winston memorizes it and later drops the paper into the memory hole. He realizes he has reached the outer edges of the conspiracy.
