Julia tells her name and nature
Winston learns that the girl's name is Julia, and that she works in the Fiction Department on the novel-writing machines. She describes herself as a good Party member on the surface: a troop-leader in the Spies, a volunteer for the Junior Anti-Sex League, always cheerful and never shirking. But she has brought black-market chocolate, and she speaks with coarse hatred of the Party. She tells Winston she spotted him as someone who didn't belong. Her practical, rebellious attitude amazes him, and he feels that she is a rebel from the waist downwards.
