Winston recalls the photograph of Jones, Aaronson and Rutherford

Winston remembers the one time in his life he held concrete evidence of the falsification of history. In 1973 he found a half-page torn out of the Times, containing a photograph of Jones, Aaronson and Rutherford at a Party function in New York. All three men had confessed to being on Eurasian soil on that date, but the photograph proved they were in New York. Winston knew the confessions were lies. He covered the photograph with another sheet of paper, waited ten minutes, and then dropped it into the memory hole. Now he regrets destroying it, though the past has been so often rewritten that it might not even be evidence anymore.
