Parsons collects Hate Week subscription

Parsons, Winston's fellow tenant at Victory Mansions, joins the table and gives off an intense smell of sweat. He asks Winston for the two dollars he promised for the Hate Week house-by-house fund. Winston hands over the money, and Parsons enters it in a small notebook in the neat handwriting of the illiterate. Parsons boasts about the preparations for Hate Week and about his daughter's troop of Spies. He tells the story of how his seven-year-old daughter followed a strange man for two hours and handed him over to the patrols, believing he was an enemy agent because of his unusual shoes. Winston is taken aback, but dutifully agrees that they cannot afford to take chances.
