Hate Week preparations intensify
The weather is baking hot, and the preparations for Hate Week are in full swing. Processions, meetings, military parades, lectures, waxwork displays and film shows have to be organized. Julia's unit in the Fiction Department is rushing out atrocity pamphlets, while Winston spends long periods going through back files of the Times and altering news items. Rockets kill larger numbers of people than usual, and riots break out. A new poster of a monstrous Eurasian soldier appears all over London. The proles are being lashed into frenzies of patriotism, and there are angry demonstrations, burnings of Goldstein in effigy, and attacks on suspected spies.
