The Two Minutes Hate begins
In the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, Winston takes his place among the chairs grouped in front of the big telescreen. He sees two people he knows by sight: a dark-haired girl from the Fiction Department, whom he dislikes and suspects of being an agent of the Thought Police, and O'Brien, a member of the Inner Party. O'Brien sits in the same row, a couple of places away from Winston. A hideous grinding screech bursts from the telescreen, and the face of Emmanuel Goldstein, the Enemy of the People, flashes onto the screen. Goldstein is a renegade who once been a leading figure of the Party and is now the object of universal hatred. The Two Minutes Hate is a daily ritual in which the crowd works itself into fury against Goldstein and the armies of Eurasia.
