Winston lives in the Chestnut Tree Café

Winston sits in his usual corner of the Chestnut Tree Café, gazing into an empty glass. He drinks Victory Gin laced with cloves and saccharine, and plays chess in a desultory way. He has a sinecure in the Ministry of Truth and always plenty of money. He listens to the telescreen and worries vaguely about the war in Africa. He has grown fatter and his face is coarsely red, but the smell of gin is mixed in his mind with the smell of rats. His mind can no longer fix itself on any subject for more than a few moments at a time.
