Lovemaking in the rented room

Winston and Julia fling their clothes off and climb into the huge mahogany bed. It is the first time Winston has stripped naked in her presence, and he is ashamed of his pale, meagre body. They make love and then fall asleep for a little while. When Winston wakes, he watches Julia sleep and feels a deep tenderness. Down in the yard a prole woman sings while pegging out diapers. The room, with its absence of a telescreen, feels like a pocket of the past where extinct animals can walk.
