a cold day in March 1985, in a public park
Winston and Julia meet again after betrayal
Winston meets Julia by chance in the Park on a vile, biting March day. She has changed: her face is sallower, with a long scar across her forehead, and her body has thickened and stiffened. She says baldly, 'I betrayed you,' and he answers, 'I betrayed you.' She describes how they make you say 'Do it to somebody else,' and how at the time you really mean it. They both agree that after that you don't feel the same toward the other person any longer. There is nothing more to say, and they part without arranging to meet again.
