July 1984, in the rented room
Julia and Winston discuss staying human
Winston suggests that the best thing would be to walk out of the room and never see each other again. Julia refuses, saying, 'I'm rather good at staying alive.' Winston tells her that when the Thought Police catch them, they will be utterly alone and powerless. Julia says they will confess under torture, but the Party cannot make them believe it. He says, 'They can't get inside you. If you can feel that staying human is worth while, even when it can't have any result whatever, you've beaten them.' They hold onto the idea that the inner heart remains impregnable.
